I haven't yet seen little C throw himself on the floor and scream because he didn't get what he wanted. He may have done that in the comfort of his own home, but not at ours yet. He has said "No" to us, though, but that's just par for the course. He's (almost) two!
Little children are known to have tantrums. I remember when my four children were all under seven years old. Tantrums were not fun times. Experience has taught me a lot, though. I look back now and would have encouraged myself-as-a-young-mom to chill out more and take more time to determine what emotions led to the tantrum, not just deal with what I was seeing. I'd talk more and react less. Of course, as they say, hindsight is 20/20.
There's a lesson in there for us adults, too. We might not throw a physical tantrum (I hope!), but we all have moments where we sulk. Not super mature!
I guess we learn as we go, don't we? Thankfully, my adult kids still love me, as imperfect as I was/am! And my husband does, too!
K-Mart was a place my daughter seemed to have tantrums in. Otherwise, both kids were pretty good at not having them and the wee one doesn't have too many around us. I read somewhere that kids often have tantrums because they can't express with words what they might want, are feeling, etc. Having that info has helped me in dealing with wee one if he seems on a brink of something. Not that I give in to him, but I can often re-direct and avoid a potential tantrum.

I think you're right, Betty. They don't know how to express themselves verbally yet, and all that pent up emotion has to go somewhere!
DeleteOur (just) 2 year old grandson has started having the odd tantrum. I find distraction can help but as you say it's important to try and identify what triggers the tantrum and try to prevent it happening but of course hindsight is a wonderful thing! As a grandparent I find there is also less pressure to rush my grandsons so that helps too.
ReplyDeleteSo true, there's so much less pressure being a grandparent. It's great!
DeleteAhh! Tantrums. I believe they really never go away! They just get expressed differently - in a more socially acceptable manner but still identifiable as a tantrum. As in Tweeting!
ReplyDeleteYou may be right.. some of the comments on social media these days can only be attributed to adult tantrums! ;)
