~Why~

Day 4 Why

"Why, mommy?" .......

I have a little toddler grandson right now who is still at the stage of taking in everything he sees in the world around him, without really talking about it. He points, he smiles, he laughs, he claps, he runs toward, he touches. But he hasn’t really started talking yet. He hasn’t started asking “Why?”.

Oh, he let’s us know what he wants, but we’re not really answering his questions. We are more often just telling him what we think he wants or needs to hear. The questions aren’t coming. Yet. One day he’s going to start asking "why?"  That will be interesting!

I love how a child’s questions are both simple and deep. Asking questions means we’re engaging with the world around us. It’s healthy to ask questions.

I believe God is good with us asking questions, too. He’s all ears and, because He loves us, He will reveal the answers at the right time. We may want the answers sooner than we get them, though!

I’ve  joined the 31 Days of Five Minute Freewrites. Read more about it here.

~Afraid~

And the 31 day freewrite challenge continues..

Day 2 Afraid

“Be not afraid.”

Apparently, this is the one phrase most often repeated in the Bible. Recently I read something very interesting about this command.

Well, it sounds like a command, doesn’t it? I wonder in what tone this was spoken? Do you think it was spoken harshly or gently? With frustration or with love? Belittling or encouraging?

Note that the words weren't “Don’t FEEL afraid.”  They were “Don’t BE afraid.”  In other words, don’t let fear overtake your life.  Just because you feel fear, doesn’t mean you have to be a completely fearful person.  Feeling and Being are two different things. Sometimes I feel afraid. I’m human.

There are many happenings in the world around us that cause us to feel fear. But we don’t need to be known as fearful people. I certainly don’t want to define myself in terms of my fear. I know I’m much more than that. How about you?

~Story~

I've decided to join the '31 days of Five Minute Freewrites' . With a given topic, I hope to write every single day during the month of October.  No overthinking, just set the timer and write for 5 minutes. We'll see how this goes, and if I actually am able to complete this challenge. I haven't done a writing challenge in a long time! But, the way I look at it, some writing is better than no writing. So, here goes!

This is also my landing page. Please scroll to the end of this post  for all of my submissions for this challenge, as they go live.

Day 1: Story

Your life tells a story. My life tells a story. Have you ever thought of what sort of story your life is telling? The other day I was browsing through our local free paper. Sometimes I enjoy scanning the obituaries. I don’t live in a huge city, so occasionally  I read about people I know who have passed away. Such was this past week. What I didn’t expect to see was someone younger than myself, a woman I had met years ago when we attended the same church. She was one of those people that made your life richer for having known her. This woman exuded joy wherever she went. She had a vibrant personality and her faith shone through in everything she did. She also suffered from a disease for many years, but this didn’t stop her at all. In fact, she was the friend who had invited me to her home to watch a video documentary over 30 years ago, the one I had mentioned in my previous post.  Her life certainly told a story. And it changed mine.
